The Elegant Nurses Forum has extended warm felicitations to nurses across the globe as the world marks the 2026 International Nurses Week, describing nurses as the backbone of healthcare systems worldwide. In a statement signed by the National Coordinator of the forum, Thomas Abiodun Olamide, the group praised nurses for their sacrifices, compassion, resilience and commitment to saving lives in hospitals, communities and homes.

The forum noted that nurses continue to play critical roles in healthcare delivery, ranging from monitoring patients and administering medications to providing emotional support, educating families and responding to emergencies.

According to the statement, nurses often serve as the bridge between doctors, patients and communities, remaining at the frontline of healthcare services despite difficult working conditions.

The group, however, expressed concern over the growing shortage of healthcare personnel in many countries, warning that inadequate staffing places enormous pressure on nurses and weakens the quality of healthcare services.

It stated that many nurses are forced to work long hours under stressful conditions, leading to physical exhaustion, emotional burnout and mental fatigue.

The forum also lamented that many nurses sacrifice personal and family time in order to care for patients, yet remain underpaid, overworked and insufficiently appreciated in several healthcare systems.

Calling for urgent reforms, the forum urged governments and healthcare institutions to prioritise improved welfare packages, fair salaries, safer working environments, adequate staffing and mental health support for nurses.

“Healthcare cannot function without nurses. Every government, healthcare institution and society must begin to treat nurses with the dignity, respect and support they deserve,” the statement read.

The forum further encouraged nurses to remain proud of their profession, stressing that their sacrifices and dedication continue to save lives daily.

This year’s International Nurses Week is themed: “Our Nurses. Our Future. Empowered Nurses Save Lives.”
