APC’s budget for security jumps from #969b to ₦5.41tr
NDC Vanguard, a support group aligned with the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has criticised the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) over the country’s security spending since the party assumed power in 2015, alleging that despite rising budgetary allocations, insecurity has persisted across the nation.
In a post shared on X on Monday, the group listed annual security and defence budget figures from 2015 to 2026, claiming that more than ₦33 trillion had been allocated to the sector under successive APC-led administrations.
According to the figures released by the group, Nigeria’s security and defence budget stood at ₦969 billion in 2015 before increasing to ₦1.04 trillion in 2016 and ₦1.14 trillion in 2017. The allocations reportedly rose to ₦1.3 trillion in 2018 and ₦1.33 trillion in 2019.
The post further stated that the budgets increased to ₦1.69 trillion in 2020, ₦1.86 trillion in 2021, and ₦2.49 trillion in 2022. In 2023, the allocation was put at ₦2.98 trillion, rising to ₦3.25 trillion in 2024, ₦4.91 trillion in 2025, and ₦5.41 trillion in 2026.
“Over ₦33 trillion spent. APC is stealing our security away,” the group alleged in the post.
The statement comes amid ongoing national debates over the effectiveness of government spending on security, as Nigerians continue to express concerns over terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other violent crimes affecting different parts of the country.
The APC has repeatedly maintained that its administration remains committed to improving the nation’s security architecture through increased funding, acquisition of military equipment and enhanced support for security agencies.
However, opposition groups have continued to question whether the substantial allocations made to the sector over the years have translated into improved safety and security outcomes for citizens.
