Police partner NCDMB to train officers in AI and digital skills

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has intensified its technology-driven approach to combating crime through a strategic partnership with the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB), aimed at equipping police personnel with cutting-edge skills in artificial intelligence (AI), digital policing and other emerging technologies.

The initiative underscores the Force’s commitment to modernising policing operations and strengthening its capacity to respond to increasingly sophisticated criminal activities through the deployment of technology and data-driven intelligence.

Under the collaboration, the NCDMB has been saddled with the responsibility of facilitating specialised training programmes for police officers in artificial intelligence, digital technologies, cybersecurity, data analytics and other critical digital competencies required for modern law enforcement.

Police authorities said the training is expected to enhance the operational effectiveness of officers by enabling them to leverage AI-powered tools for crime prevention, intelligence gathering, digital forensics, criminal investigations and evidence management.

The programme is also designed to prepare officers for emerging security challenges, including cybercrime, identity theft, financial fraud, online scams and technology-enabled criminal networks that continue to evolve across the country.

Speaking on the partnership, senior police officials described technology as a critical component of contemporary policing, noting that traditional methods alone are no longer sufficient to tackle today’s complex security threats.

According to the Force, the digital transformation agenda will improve investigative efficiency, strengthen intelligence-led policing and support faster responses to criminal incidents through the application of innovative technological solutions.

The NCDMB, while reaffirming its commitment to national capacity development, said the partnership reflects its broader mandate of promoting human capital development by supporting institutions with critical skills required in the digital economy.

The Board explained that beyond its traditional focus on Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, it has continued to invest in technology-driven capacity building initiatives that contribute to national development and institutional strengthening.

Security experts have welcomed the collaboration, describing it as a timely intervention that aligns with global best practices in law enforcement. They noted that artificial intelligence is increasingly being deployed by police agencies around the world to analyse crime patterns, enhance surveillance, support predictive policing and improve criminal investigations.

Analysts also stressed that continuous investment in digital skills would enable the Nigeria Police Force to better tackle cyber-enabled crimes while improving public safety and service delivery.

The partnership forms part of broader efforts by the Nigeria Police Force to embrace innovation, strengthen institutional capacity and build a technologically proficient workforce capable of addressing the evolving security challenges facing the country.
