MTN Nigeria Communications Plc has announced that it has fully repaid all its foreign currency loans, marking a significant financial milestone that strengthens the company’s balance sheet and positions it for accelerated investment in Nigeria’s telecommunications sector.
The telecom operator said the complete elimination of its foreign currency debt reflects its disciplined financial management strategy and commitment to building a more resilient business amid the country’s volatile foreign exchange environment.
The development is expected to reduce the company’s exposure to exchange rate fluctuations, which have weighed heavily on the earnings of many Nigerian businesses in recent years. By removing its foreign currency obligations, MTN Nigeria is expected to improve its financial flexibility, lower financing costs and enhance shareholder value over the long term.
The company noted that the stronger balance sheet will enable it to channel more resources into expanding network capacity, improving service quality and accelerating the rollout of broadband and digital infrastructure across the country.
As part of its ongoing investment programme, MTN Nigeria disclosed that it invested more than ₦620 billion during the first half of 2026 to enhance network performance, increase coverage and support rising demand for voice and data services. The investment was directed toward expanding 4G and 5G infrastructure, modernising network equipment, increasing transmission capacity and improving customer experience nationwide.
The company said the capital expenditure underscores its commitment to supporting Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda by providing reliable connectivity for individuals, businesses and government institutions.
Industry analysts say the elimination of foreign currency debt places MTN Nigeria in a stronger competitive position, particularly as telecom operators continue to invest heavily in infrastructure to meet growing demand for digital services, cloud computing, fintech solutions and high-speed internet access.
The stronger financial position is also expected to provide the company with greater capacity to pursue strategic growth opportunities, including expanding broadband penetration, supporting enterprise digital solutions and deepening financial inclusion through its digital platforms.
MTN Nigeria remains the country’s largest telecommunications operator by subscriber base and continues to play a central role in driving digital innovation, financial inclusion and economic development. The company’s renewed focus on infrastructure investment is expected to improve network reliability, expand connectivity to underserved communities and support Nigeria’s ambition of building a more inclusive digital economy.
With its foreign currency debt now fully extinguished and substantial investments already committed to network expansion, MTN Nigeria appears well positioned to sustain growth while delivering improved services to millions of customers across the country.
