Makinde’s camp prays for Adelabu’s emergence as APC candidate
There is jubilation in the camp of Oyo State government as minister of power, Adebayo Adelabu, is set to resign from his position in the coming days to join the governorship race.
Adelabu’s planned resignation is following a high-level meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The development was confirmed in a statement issued by the Minister’s Special Adviser on Strategic Communications and Media Relations, Tunji Bolaji, after the closed-door meeting held on Tuesday.
“President Tinubu commended the minister for his dedication and the progress recorded, particularly in laying a strong policy foundation for the transformation of the power sector,” the statement read.
It added that the president granted Adelabu his “consent and blessing” to pursue his governorship ambition in Oyo State ahead of the 2027 elections.
“In view of this development, Chief Adebayo Adelabu is expected to resign his position as Minister of Power in the coming days,” the statement added.
The move has elated the PDP camp in Oyo State as they are optimistic of humiliating the APC in the coming election if Adelabu emerges the APC candidate.
“Adelabu’s planned resignation to join the governorship race is a welcome development,” a source close to the governor said.
The source added: “We have been praying and wishing that he resigns and eventually emerges the APC candidate. That will give us an easy ride in the next election because Adelabu is widely reputed for his failure as power minister.
“Many people don’t remember his name anymore. All they know and call him is Olokunkun or Okunkun, Okunkun birimubirimu 1 among others. We will just go and sleep and not bother campaigning if Adelabu ends up as APC candidate. We defeated him before, we will humiliate him over and over again. He is eminently welcome.”
