The association said it was particularly appreciative of NEDC’s interventions in the livestock sector, including the provision of potable water for pastoral communities, animal feeds and palliatives for internally displaced persons.
It argued that creating jobs would not only improve livelihoods but also reduce the vulnerability of unemployed youths to recruitment into criminal activities.
On agriculture, KACRAN urged NEDC and the governors to focus on the development of arable farming, livestock and fisheries.
The association said increased agricultural production would strengthen food security, boost Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product through the export of processed agricultural products and reduce dependence on imported food items.
KACRAN proposed that NEDC provide technical experts and financial support for the initiative, while the state governments provide land and security.
The association also urged the commission and the governors to intensify the exploration and development of the North-East’s natural resources.
It said the region was endowed with significant mineral and other natural resources which, if properly explored, processed and exported, could contribute substantially to Nigeria’s economic growth and competitiveness.
KACRAN further called for the revival of what it described as the NNDC Empire, as part of efforts to promote stronger economic integration, regional development and security in Northern Nigeria.
The association expressed hope that other regional development commissions would emulate successful initiatives implemented by NEDC in order to accelerate development across their respective regions.
Meanwhile, KACRAN commended the NEDC management for its reported procurement of 10,000 buses, 18-seater buses, taxis and tricycles aimed at improving affordable transportation within the North-East and beyond.
The association praised the Managing Director of NEDC, Alhaji Mohammed Goni Alkali, alongside the Director of Administration and Finance, Dr. Garba Iliya, other directors and staff of the commission for their efforts in developing the region.
KACRAN said it remained committed to initiatives capable of promoting peace, economic self-reliance and sustainable development in Northern Nigeria.
