Jonathan yet to declare presidential ambition

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has said he is yet to decide whether he will contest the 2027 presidential election, insisting that he will first consult widely and listen to the wishes of Nigerians before making any announcement.

Jonathan made the remarks while responding to growing calls from youth groups and political supporters urging him to return to active politics and seek another term in office.

Addressing the supporters, the former president acknowledged the increasing nationwide appeals but stressed that seeking the nation’s highest office is a serious responsibility that requires careful reflection rather than an impulsive decision.

“You are asking me to contest the next election. The presidential race is not a computer game. I have heard your calls and I will consult widely before taking any decision,” Jonathan said.

His comments have reignited political discussions across the country, with many Nigerians speculating over the possibility of a major realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Supporters who gathered to express solidarity described Jonathan as a leader capable of promoting national unity, strengthening democratic institutions and addressing Nigeria’s economic and security challenges. They urged him to heed what they described as the “voice of the people” by joining the presidential race.

Jonathan, however, maintained that any decision would only come after extensive consultations with political stakeholders, associates and Nigerians from different walks of life.

The former president also used the opportunity to encourage greater participation in the democratic process, especially among young people. He expressed concern over declining voter turnout, warning that voter apathy poses a serious threat to Nigeria’s democracy.

According to him, citizens must remain actively involved in elections and hold leaders accountable through peaceful and credible democratic processes.

The latest remarks are expected to intensify political calculations ahead of the 2027 elections, as political parties continue consultations and coalition talks while awaiting Jonathan’s final position.

Jonathan served as Nigeria’s president between 2010 and 2015 and has remained influential in African diplomacy through election observation and mediation efforts since leaving office.

Although he has neither declared his intention to run nor ruled himself out, political observers believe his eventual decision could significantly shape the dynamics of the 2027 presidential contest. For now, the former president says he is listening to Nigerians and will only announce his position after broad consultations.
