Entertainment industry loses star actor
The Nigerian entertainment industry is in mourning following the tragic passing of beloved Nollywood actor Alexx Ekubo, who died at the age of 40 after a prolonged battle with cancer. Family sources confirmed that Ekubo passed away on Monday, May 11, 2026, after months of illness, as reported by The Sun Nigeria.
Ekubo’s extended absence from the public eye had raised concerns among fans and colleagues alike, as he refrained from social media and public appearances for an extended period. His last Instagram post was made in December 2024, shortly after news broke that his engagement to US-based model Fancy Acholonu had ended.
Upon hearing of his untimely death, tributes from colleagues, celebrities, activists, and fans flooded social media, with many commemorating him as a talented actor and a compassionate friend. Actress Funke Akindele expressed her sorrow in a heartfelt Instagram Story, reflecting on their friendship and saying, “Rest in peace, Alex. I tried to reach out to see you one more time, but I guess you knew best. I will always remember and cherish the good times we shared together.”
Actor Bolanle Ninalowo echoed similar sentiments, stating, “Rest on, Alex. May God heal your family and us all.”
Veteran actor Richard Mofe-Damijo shared his disbelief, writing, “Life is not only fickle, it can also feel unreal. It deeply saddens me to hear this news. Rest in peace to a truly great soul… Sleep well, our dear Alex.”
Activist Omoyele Sowore praised Ekubo as a “rare talent,” offering condolences to his family and friends while recalling the impact of his performances. “He was a rare talent whose presence lit up the screen effortlessly. May he rest in power,” Sowore wrote on X.
Broadcaster Oseni Rufai and actor Godwin Nnadiekwe also expressed their grief, with Nnadiekwe calling the news “heartbreaking” and reflecting on the loss of a “rare soul,” while human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong acknowledged Ekubo’s significant contributions to the industry.
Prior to his passing, Ekubo addressed public curiosity regarding his unmarried status, suggesting he was focused on his career rather than hasty commitments to matrimony. His previous engagement with Fancy Acholonu, which gained public attention, was called off in 2021, although she later reaffirmed her love for him in 2023.
Known for his charisma, versatility, and striking presence on screen, Ekubo enjoyed a successful career in Nollywood, starring in numerous hit films and television productions. His untimely death represents a profound loss to Nollywood and the broader Nigerian entertainment community, where he was celebrated as both a gifted performer and a cherished colleague.
