2nd CEAUP International Conference On Migration to convene global experts in Porto, Portugal

Leading scholars, policymakers and practitioners from around the world will gather in Porto, Portugal, from July 1–3, 2026, for the 2nd CEAUP International Conference on Migration.

The conference, hosted at the University of Porto partner location, Instituto Pernambuco Porto Brasil, is being organized by the Migration Observatory Lab at the Centre for African Studies of the University of Porto in collaboration with international partners, including Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Nigeria.

It will hold at the Instituto Pernambuco Porto Rua das Estrelas 143, Porto, Portugal.

This year’s conference will focus on the theme: “Migration and Artificial Intelligence: Governance, Ethics, and Future Pathways.”

According to the organisers, the event will explore the growing intersection between migration and artificial intelligence, with discussions centred on how emerging technologies are transforming migration governance, ethical frameworks and future mobility patterns across the globe.

The three-day programme will feature keynote addresses, panel discussions and interactive sessions designed to address contemporary challenges and opportunities in migration management and AI-driven solutions.

Lead researcher and conference convener, Akinwale Roy Ojomo, said the gathering was motivated by the need to develop innovative ideas supported by artificial intelligence technology.

“The urgency in creating innovative ideas supported by AI technology is the reason we are gathering in Porto, Portugal, this year,” he said.

Among the keynote speakers is Dr. Koko Warner, Director at the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Global Data Institute in Geneva, who is expected to discuss the role of big data in addressing migration challenges in Europe.

Also scheduled to speak is Bisi Obateru, founder of US-based company Just I Guide, who will present practical approaches to using AI in processing immigration procedures online.

Organisers disclosed that numerous abstracts have been received, while several key practitioners have confirmed participation in the hybrid event. Opportunities are also available for virtual attendance.

The conference is expected to attract an international audience of researchers, institutional representatives and professionals, promoting dialogue, collaboration and knowledge sharing.

Invitations have been extended to Portugal’s Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA) and the European Union to deliver goodwill messages, particularly in light of the recent implementation of the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum.

The event will also witness the launch of the JAPA Process Theory and Modeling, an initiative aimed at helping countries of origin establish information portals on legal migration pathways and reduce irregular migration.
