Tinubu worried by oppositions’ attacks

President Bola Tinubu Friday night revisited the attacks on the Electoral Act 2026  by the opposition saying the move was a  disfavor to the country and the citizens.

Tinubu said the law underwent rigorous legislative scrutiny, including public hearings, before its passage by the National Assembly in line with constitutional provisions.

He spoke at the 4th Elective National Convention of the party which had in attendance  Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, House of Representatives Speaker Tajudeen Abass,31 state governors of the party and other government and party officials.

He said that while the government was not averse to criticism, the stance of the opposition on the matter was out of place.

“While we welcome criticism, the constant attacks by opposition groups on the Electoral Act 2026 are a disservice to the Nigerian people,”he said.

“It is public knowledge that the processes leading to the amendment… passed through the crucible of legislative scrutiny, including public hearings. The Electoral Act was passed by the National Assembly, elected by the Nigerian people,” Tinubu added.

He stressed that the Act represents Nigeria’s collective resolve to strengthen its electoral system and deepen democracy.

“The Act reflects our collective quest as a nation to strengthen our electoral system and consolidate democratic rule,” he pointed out , adding that his administration remained committed to  the rule of law,conduct of   credible elections and protection of  the integrity of elections.

He similarly dismissed insinuations that the APC was working toward entrenching a one party system in the country.

“We do not seek a one-party state. Democracy thrives on vibrant and healthy competition,” he said.

Continuing, he said:“As a statesman and political leader, I believe in a credible opposition—one that can challenge, question and help refine policies. That is how statecraft improves, and good governance is achieved.”
