The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has intensified calls for transparency and accountability in Nigeria’s power sector, following allegations surrounding the disappearance or diversion of about ₦128 billion in public funds linked to electricity operations.

In a legal action filed against the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, and the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Plc (NBET), SERAP is seeking a thorough investigation into the management of the funds and demanding that anyone found responsible be held accountable.

According to the organisation, the case is aimed at ensuring prudent management of public resources and strengthening transparency in the electricity sector, which continues to face challenges despite significant government investments over the years.

SERAP argued that citizens have the right to know how public funds allocated to critical sectors are spent, stressing that accountability is essential to improving electricity supply and restoring confidence in government institutions.

The civil society group also called on relevant anti-corruption agencies to investigate the alleged diversion of the funds and ensure that any recovered money is returned to the public treasury.

Neither the Ministry of Power nor NBET had issued an official response at the time of filing this report. However, analysts note that the outcome of the legal action could have significant implications for governance and financial accountability within Nigeria’s power sector.

The development comes amid increasing scrutiny of public expenditure in the energy industry, with stakeholders urging stronger oversight mechanisms to ensure that resources meant for improving electricity generation, transmission and distribution are effectively utilised.
