Peter Obi decries rising violence, says Nigeria risks losing its humanity
Labour Party’s presidential candidate in 2023 election, Peter Obi, has expressed deep concern over what he described as Nigeria’s growing moral and social decay following the brutal killing of a teacher and the rape and murder of an elderly woman.
In a post shared on X, the NDC presidential candidate said the tragic incidents reflected a dangerous decline in humanity and societal values, stressing that the attacks were not isolated cases but symptoms of a deeper national crisis.
Obi questioned how society had reached a stage where teachers could be “hunted and killed” while elderly citizens, whom he described as custodians of wisdom and memory, were subjected to “dehumanising violence.”
According to him, the situation goes beyond insecurity and points to a collective failure of humanity, warning that many Nigerians had become increasingly desensitised to violence and tragedy.
He lamented that shocking incidents now receive only temporary attention before the public moves on, allowing indifference to normalise unacceptable acts.
The former Anambra State governor sympathised with the affected families, saying he shared in their grief, but insisted that mourning alone would not solve the problem.
Obi called for urgent systemic reforms and accountability, warning that if such atrocities no longer inspire action, the nation risks losing its sh
ared humanity.
