NDC takes stand on primary election results
The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has ratified and endorsed the outcome of the party’s nationwide primary elections while approving plans to introduce electronic voting in future congresses and primaries.
This was disclosed by former Bayelsa State governor and party leader, Seriake Dickson, following the NDC’s second NEC meeting held on Wednesday.
The meeting was attended by the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, his running mate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, members of the National Working Committee, state chairmen, party leaders, and stakeholders from across the country.
According to Dickson, the meeting reviewed the party’s progress, assessed the outcome of the recently concluded primaries, and outlined strategies for strengthening the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He commended Obi and Kwankwaso for their leadership and commitment throughout the party’s primary processes. He also praised governorship, National Assembly, and State Assembly aspirants, as well as party leaders and supporters who participated in the primaries and NEC meeting.
The NEC, after reviewing reports from across the federation, endorsed the conduct and outcome of the primary elections and lauded the efforts of electoral committees, screening and appeal panels, party officials, volunteers, aspirants, candidates, and supporters.
Dickson described the achievement as remarkable for a relatively young political party, noting that the successful conduct of the primaries demonstrated the party’s growing strength and organisational capacity.
While acknowledging challenges and disagreements in some locations, the NEC reaffirmed its commitment to internal democracy, transparency, fairness, and inclusion. The committee resolved to intensify reconciliation efforts, consultations, and stakeholder engagement across the country and urged all aspirants and members to remain committed to building the party.
As part of efforts to strengthen party administration, NEC approved the introduction of electronic voting for future congresses and primary elections. The committee also directed the enhancement of the party’s digital membership registration and data management systems to promote transparency, participation, and confidence in its processes.
The meeting further resolved to intensify grassroots mobilisation and membership expansion nationwide while strengthening party structures at ward, local government, state, zonal, and national levels in preparation for the 2027 elections.
NEC also reviewed recent developments in the nation’s electoral environment, including aspects of the Electoral Act and guidelines issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission. The committee reaffirmed the party’s commitment to pursuing legal and constitutional avenues in defence of electoral justice, democratic participation, and a level playing field.
Dickson said the meeting ended on a note of optimism and unity, with members expressing determination to build what he described as a credible and nationally accepted political movement focused on good governance, national development, and democratic renewal.
