Germany rejects Fani Kayode’s nomination as ambassador

Germany has reportedly declined the nomination of former Nigerian Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode for an ambassadorial role, citing concerns over his past public conduct and statements.

The nomination, which had been approved earlier in the month by President Bola Tinubu, was forwarded to German authorities for the required diplomatic clearance. According to sources, the decision to reject the nomination came shortly after its submission, with officials pointing to behavior they considered inconsistent with the expectations of a diplomatic position.

German authorities reportedly emphasized Fani-Kayode’s history of ethnically and religiously sensitive remarks as a major factor in their decision. They expressed concerns that such views could negatively affect diplomatic relations and engagement with local communities.

Additionally, a recent incident involving the former minister and a foreign diplomat in Abuja was said to have influenced the outcome. Observers noted that the confrontation, which occurred during a Ramadan dinner, raised further questions about his suitability for a high-level diplomatic assignment.

Although Fani-Kayode has not publicly responded to the reported rejection, sources indicate that the Nigerian government may consider alternative postings for him, with South Africa mentioned as a possible option.

Fani-Kayode remains a well-known figure in Nigerian politics, often associated with controversial remarks and public disputes. Past clashes with journalists, including notable incidents in 2020, attracted widespread criticism.

He has also faced several legal challenges, including allegations of fraud and money laundering. However, courts dismissed these cases between 2024 and 2025, citing a lack of sufficient evidence.

The development highlights the level of scrutiny ambassadorial nominees undergo from host countries. Germany’s reported decision underscores that diplomatic appointments depend not only on domestic approval but also on how candidates are perceived internationally in terms of conduct and reputation.
