The family of Rivers State governor, Siminalayi Fubara, is set to retain their grip on the governorship seat.

This is as Ambassador Blessing Fubara Senior, brother of Gov Fubara, has declared his intention to contest the Rivers State governorship election on the platform of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), promising to serve only one term if elected.

Speaking ahead of the party’s primary election, the governorship aspirant described himself as a “ready, competent and energetic” candidate committed to restoring peace, stability and economic prosperity in Rivers State.

Fubara said the state had suffered economic decline and loss of dignity, calling for what he described as a collective political uprising to reclaim Rivers State’s former status.

“I am addressing you today on the occasion of the Nigerian Democratic Congress Party primary elections across states of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he said.

“We are standing on a ground competent, reliable and reputable to restore the soul of Nigeria and restore the soul of Rivers State. The case of the political happenings in Rivers State cannot be overemphasised.”

He lamented what he described as the current distressed condition of the state, saying Rivers had lost investments, opportunities and pride.

“We have lost opportunities. We have lost investments. We have lost our dignity as a people. We have lost our pride as Rivers people,” he said.

The aspirant promised to restore peace and economic growth if elected governor, insisting that political strength lies with the people rather than financial power.

“We might not challenge the financial capacity that they have, but we know that we have the people, so we are richer in capacity,” he stated.

Fubara also reaffirmed his support for the state’s zoning arrangement, insisting that the Rivers South-East Senatorial District should complete its eight-year tenure.

According to him, altering the rotation formula would create a “wrong and dangerous precedent” capable of undermining political stability in the state.

“To preserve the peaceful existence of political rotation in Rivers State, the Rivers South-East Senatorial District must complete their eight-year tenure,” he said.

The governorship hopeful pledged to serve only a single four-year term before supporting power rotation to another senatorial district.

“I have vowed to do just a four-year one-term tenure to bring the expected prosperity and development in Rivers State. When that is done, we will support our next brother who will come from the next senatorial district,” he added.

He further called on his supporters across the 23 local government areas of the state to mobilise massively for the party’s primary election.

Fubara also appealed to what he described as his “elder brother” in the governorship race to step down in support of what he termed “the uprising of the people” aimed at reclaiming t

he state and restoring prosperity.
