Nigeria’s top commercial banks collectively processed a staggering ₦286 trillion in mobile banking transactions in 2025, underscoring a major leap in the country’s digital payments evolution and intensifying rivalry with fintech operators.

Industry data indicates that the surge was driven by sustained investments in modern digital infrastructure by leading lenders, enabling them to significantly improve service delivery and compete more effectively in a space once dominated by fintech platforms.

For years, traditional banks struggled with frequent system downtimes and inconsistent user experience, despite rapid growth in mobile banking adoption. However, recent upgrades have delivered improved platform stability, faster transaction speeds, and more intuitive customer interfaces—factors that are helping banks regain lost ground.

Key contributors to the surge include Guaranty Trust Holding Company, United Bank for Africa, Zenith Bank, and First Bank of Nigeria, all of which expanded their digital capabilities and recorded sharp increases in mobile transaction volumes.

The development signals a turning point for Nigeria’s financial services industry. Fintech firms such as OPay and PalmPay, long favoured for their speed and convenience, are now facing intensified competition from traditional banks that have closed much of the technology gap.

Analysts say the competitive landscape is entering a new phase where differentiation will depend less on basic functionality and more on pricing, customer experience, and value-added services such as instant credit, embedded finance, and personalised offerings.

With both banks and fintech companies ramping up efforts to capture market share, Nigeria’s rapidly expanding digital payments ecosystem is poised for even fiercer competition in the years ahead.
