Billionaire businessman and philanthropist Tony O. Elumelu will retire as Group Chairman of United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc on August 21, 2026, marking the end of a transformative 12-year tenure at the helm of one of Africa’s largest financial institutions. His retirement follows the completion of the maximum tenure for non-executive directors as stipulated by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
The announcement was approved by UBA’s Board of Directors at its meeting on July 6, 2026. The board also named Emmanuel N. Nnorom, a current non-executive director, as the incoming Group Chairman. Nnorom’s appointment will take effect on the same date as Elumelu’s retirement, ensuring a seamless leadership transition for the pan-African banking group.
Elumelu’s departure closes a significant chapter in UBA’s history. During his leadership, the bank consolidated its position as one of Africa’s foremost financial institutions, expanding its footprint across 20 African countries as well as the United Kingdom, France, the United States and the United Arab Emirates. His tenure was characterized by a strong commitment to innovation, digital banking, financial inclusion and regional integration, helping UBA strengthen its reputation as “Africa’s Global Bank.”
Although stepping down from the UBA board, Elumelu is expected to remain active across his extensive business empire. He will continue to chair Heirs Holdings, Transcorp Group, and the Tony Elumelu Foundation, through which he has championed entrepreneurship across Africa by funding and mentoring thousands of young business owners. These platforms remain central to his philosophy of “Africapitalism,” which advocates private-sector-led economic development across the continent.
Industry analysts view the transition as a regulatory-driven succession rather than a strategic exit from business. They note that UBA has developed a strong governance structure over the years, making the leadership change a planned evolution rather than a disruption. Emmanuel Nnorom is expected to build on Elumelu’s legacy while steering the bank through the next phase of growth amid increasing digital transformation and expanding cross-border financial services.
The banking community has widely acknowledged Elumelu’s contribution to Nigeria’s financial sector. Before becoming chairman, he played a pivotal role in the merger of Standard Trust Bank and UBA, creating one of Africa’s leading banking institutions. His leadership has also been credited with enhancing corporate governance, driving profitability and positioning UBA as a key player in financing trade and economic development across Africa.
With his retirement from UBA, Elumelu leaves behind a legacy that extends beyond banking into entrepreneurship, investment and philanthropy. While his role at UBA comes to an end, his continued involvement in strategic investments and enterprise development suggests that he will remain an influential figure in shaping Africa’s economic future.
