The Nigerian Army has dismantled a major stronghold linked to the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN) in Imo State, uncovering suspected remains of two soldiers killed in 2022.

Details of the operation were contained in an official report released to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja. The report stated that troops of the 82 Division, working alongside other security agencies, carried out the mission on Friday along the Ubaha-Orsu corridor in Orsu Local Government Area.

According to the military, the operation formed part of ongoing clearance efforts aimed at rooting out IPOB/ESN fighters and locating the remains of Master Warrant Officer Linus Musa Audu and Private Gloria Mathew. The two personnel were abducted and killed in May 2022 while travelling for their traditional wedding.

Troops advancing toward the suspected camp reportedly came under heavy attack from armed fighters but responded with superior firepower, successfully repelling multiple ambushes and forcing the attackers to retreat.

Following the takeover of the camp, soldiers conducted a detailed search of the area and uncovered shallow graves believed to contain the remains of the slain personnel. The remains have since been exhumed and secured for forensic examination, including DNA testing, to confirm their identities.

The Army said efforts are ongoing to work with the families of the deceased to ensure proper identification and arrange dignified burials.

The operation, according to the report, highlights the military’s determination to bring justice to fallen personnel and dismantle criminal networks operating in the South-East. It also described the discovery as further evidence of atrocities committed by IPOB/ESN elements.

The Nigerian Army reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining operations in the region until criminal groups are neutralised and lasting peace is restored. Residents were also urged to remain vigilant and support security agencies with credible information.
