In a dramatic turn of events, frontline presidential contenders for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rotimi Amaechi and Alhaji Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, have vocally criticized the party’s recent presidential primaries, calling the process a blatant manipulation.
In a passionate statement released on X, Amaechi expressed his deep disappointment and outrage over the primaries, which he labeled as “concocted results.” He emphasized that the evident rigging undermines the moral standing of the ADC, especially when the party has previously accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of similar electoral malpractices.
Amaechi stated, “Following reports of widespread voter disenfranchisement across the nation during the ADC Presidential Primaries, I categorically reject the announced results. I had made it clear that I would only accept a fair and transparent process, and I stand by that commitment.”
He further criticized the primaries, pointing out that approximately 80% of party members were deprived of their voting rights. “How can we be different from those we criticize?” he questioned, asserting that the ADC was founded to amplify the voices of the marginalized and provide a platform for all Nigerians, regardless of their background.
Adding to the turmoil, Hayatu-Deen announced his decision to boycott the announcement of the party’s primary results, citing widespread reports of vote rigging, some of which he personally witnessed. “I will not be attending the announcement of the ADC Presidential Election Results today,” he posted on X, hinting at further actions to come.
The fallout from the primaries has sparked reactions from various political observers, including supporters of Peter Obi, a former ADC member who left the party earlier this year. Many are interpreting this discord as a validation of Obi’s departure. One user, @ayemojubar, remarked, “This is the kind of dollarized, heavily rigged primary they want to drag Peter Obi into. Politics has turned into an auction house.”
As the ADC grapples with internal dissent and accusations of electoral fraud, the political landscape continues to shift, leaving many to wonder about the future of the party and its candidates.
