The attack, which occurred between Tuesday night and the early hours of Wednesday, was confirmed by the Benue State Government and the Mbajir Development Association (MDA), Makurdi.
Several of the injured, including women and children, reportedly sustained varying degrees of injuries during the assault.
The latest violence comes just days after the killing of the Benue State Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Ardo Risku, raising fears among residents that the attack may have been a reprisal.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the MDA expressed grief over the incident, describing it as a tragic assault on the community.
“The Association has received with deep sorrow reports that not fewer than fifteen (15) persons were brutally murdered in the attacks, while more than ten others, including women and children, sustained varying degrees of injuries,” the statement, jointly signed by the association’s President, Agee Sai, and General Secretary, Tindiga Aondover, read.
As of the time of filing this report, security authorities had yet to issue an official statement on the attack, while efforts to restore calm in the affected community were ongoing.
