The All Progressives Congress (APC) has issued a strongly worded statement condemning remarks made by Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, during a political gathering in Ibadan.

In a post shared via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, @OfficialAPCNg, the ruling party accused the governor of making statements capable of inciting violence and undermining national stability.

According to the APC, Governor Makinde, while addressing a summit of opposition political parties on Saturday, April 25, 2026, referenced the historical episode known as Operation Wetie. The party described the reference as inappropriate and dangerous, alleging that it was used to stir tension over claims that Nigeria is drifting toward a one-party state.

The APC condemned the remarks as “reckless” and warned that such rhetoric poses a threat to peace and national security. It expressed concern that a sitting governor—who holds constitutional responsibility as the chief security officer of his state—would invoke a period associated with political violence.

The party further stated that such comments were unbecoming of a public office holder, arguing that they could heighten political tensions and send the wrong signal to citizens.

“By his incitement to violence, Makinde has shown himself to be unworthy of the high office he occupies,” the statement read in part.

The APC called on political leaders across party lines to exercise restraint in their public utterances and to prioritise national unity, particularly amid ongoing political debates.

As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official response from Governor Makinde regarding the APC’s allegations.
