Senator Iyabo Obasanjo’s resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC) has sparked a fresh exchange between the former lawmaker and the Ogun State chapter of the party, which has dismissed her allegations of intimidation and disrespect as unfounded.
Iyabo, a former senator who represented Ogun Central, had announced her resignation from the APC on May 31, citing alleged disrespect, intimidation of her supporters and other grievances within the party.
Her departure came just months after she joined the APC and expressed interest in contesting for the party’s governorship ticket. She later suspended her ambition following the party’s adoption of a consensus arrangement.
However, in a statement issued on Tuesday, the Ogun APC, through its Publicity Secretary, Femi Nuberu, rejected the claims contained in Obasanjo’s resignation letter, insisting that she was neither sidelined nor subjected to intimidation during her time in the party.
According to the party, Obasanjo participated in a process that was transparent, inclusive and devoid of discrimination, enjoying the same rights and opportunities available to other aspirants.
“The process remained transparent, inclusive and free from discrimination. Senator Obasanjo enjoyed the same rights, privileges and opportunities available to every other aspirant,” the statement said.
The APC further argued that Obasanjo’s decision to leave the party shortly after joining it had reinforced the perception that her membership was motivated largely by her desire to secure the governorship ticket rather than a commitment to the party’s ideals and objectives.
The party noted that several leaders and aspirants who did not achieve their preferred outcomes during internal contests had remained loyal and continued to work for the growth and success of the APC.
It added that politics demands loyalty, patience, sacrifice and dedication to collective goals, stressing that democratic contests naturally produce both winners and losers.
The Ogun APC also questioned Obasanjo’s complaints about unmet conditions and unresolved grievances, pointing out that certain aspects of the governorship primary process were still ongoing at the time she tendered her resignation.
While wishing the former senator success in her future political pursuits, the party reaffirmed its commitment to unity, inclusiveness and electoral victory in Ogun State.
