In a recent post on social media platform X, Lauretta Onochie, a prominent aide to the late President Muhammadu Buhari, shared her insights on the political landscape as Nigeria prepares for the upcoming 2027 elections. Onochie emphasized the importance of aligning political choices with the reality of electoral dynamics, suggesting that the South may face significant challenges in securing victory.

Onochie stated her indifference to a leader’s regional background as long as they demonstrate a commitment to serving Nigerians effectively. However, she highlighted a crucial point: the South’s limited numbers could hinder their chances of winning the presidency on their own, especially considering the fragmentation of southern votes among candidates such as Bola Tinubu and his business associates.

Reflecting on historical precedents, Onochie noted that the North has consistently played a pivotal role in electing past presidents, including Nnamdi Azikiwe, Ernest Shonekan, Olusegun Obasanjo, Goodluck Jonathan, and most recently, Bola Tinubu. She argued that the current discontent towards Tinubu, seen as a betrayal to Nigerians, would likely prevent Northern support for a Southern candidate in the next election.

Highlighting the significance of votes, Onochie referred to them as precious commodities that should be cast wisely. “Votes are special, like diamonds,” she asserted, urging supporters to align their decisions with the numbers rather than with individuals accused of election manipulation. She cautioned against political naivety, warning that voting for Tinubu or his affiliates would effectively squander their votes.

Her message concluded with a call for voters to prioritize their electoral choices, underscoring that every vote can shape Nigeria’s future. “The choice is yours,” Onochie stated, reminding citizens that their votes are vital every four years and should be used thoughtfully.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, Onochie’s remarks seem to resonate with many Nigerians reflecting on their electoral strategies ahead of the next presidential race.
