The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) has suspended prominent lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mike Ozekhome, from using the prestigious SAN title pending the conclusion of disciplinary proceedings and other legal matters involving him.
The decision was announced in a statement issued on Wednesday by the LPPC Secretary, Kabir Akanbi, following the committee’s 173rd general meeting held on June 23, 2026.
According to the statement, the suspension was approved pursuant to Paragraph 26(6) of the Guidelines for the Conferment of the Rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria and related matters.
“The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC), at its 173rd general meeting held on 23rd June 2026, approved the suspension of Chief Mike Ozekhome from the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria,” the statement read.
The committee said the action would remain in effect until the final determination of disciplinary proceedings currently before the LPPC’s Disciplinary and Ethics Sub-Committee, as well as other pending proceedings involving the senior lawyer.
As a result of the suspension, Ozekhome has been directed to refrain from presenting himself or holding himself out as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria until the matters are resolved.
“Accordingly, Chief Mike Ozekhome shall refrain from parading himself, presenting himself, or otherwise holding himself out as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria pending the final determination of the disciplinary proceedings,” the LPPC stated.
The committee explained that the measure was intended to preserve the integrity, dignity and prestige of the SAN rank while the allegations against Ozekhome are being reviewed.
Apart from the disciplinary proceedings before the LPPC, Ozekhome is currently standing trial alongside Ponfa Useni before a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory in Maitama.
The duo is being prosecuted by the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation over allegations including document forgery, impersonation and the use of allegedly forged documents to lay claim to a property in London reportedly linked to the late Jeremiah Useni, a former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
Prosecutors allege that the forged documents include an international passport and an irrevocable power of attorney. The defendants have denied wrongdoing.
The LPPC reiterated its commitment to maintaining high ethical and professional standards within the legal profession, stressing that the SAN rank must continue to command public confidence and respect.
