Nigeria emerges Africa’s second largest domestic air travel market – FAAN
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced that Nigeria now ranks as the second-largest domestic air passenger market in Africa, recording over 10.5 million passengers—a 10 per cent increase.
FAAN’s Managing Director, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, revealed that the Murtala Muhammed International Airport recorded one of the continent’s strongest air traffic performances in 2025, with an 11.8 per cent growth rate.
She also noted that Lagos has become one of Africa’s leading cargo hubs, achieving a remarkable 34.4 per cent increase in cargo traffic.
Kuku made these remarks during the Airports Council International Africa Regional Conference and Exhibition held in Luanda, Angola.
According to her, both the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport and Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos ranked among the top 10 airports in Africa for domestic passenger traffic in 2025.
She emphasized that these achievements highlight Nigeria’s growing influence in Africa’s aviation sector, noting that the country is not only preparing to host the continent but also playing a key role in shaping the future of air connectivity.
Kuku added that the steady rise in passenger numbers, improved cargo performance, and increasing demand on airport infrastructure underscore the urgent need for modernization, stronger collaboration, and more resilient aviation systems across Africa.
