MWUN alleges security lapses after Lagos Port attack
The President General of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), Comrade Francis Bunu, has blamed security agencies for a spike in attacks on vessels at Lagos ports, warning it could damage Nigeria’s international maritime reputation.
Speaking to the Shipping Correspondents Association of Nigeria (SCAN) ahead of the 2026 Dockworkers’ Day, Bunu said the Marine Police, tasked with securing waterfronts, are failing in their duty.
“Why will a vessel berth and people come from across the water to attack it? How do they expect Nigeria to be viewed internationally?” he asked.
The comments follow a recent breach at the Eko Support Terminal, where unknown intruders attacked a berthed vessel, raising concerns among ship operators and port users over the safety of vessels in Nigerian ports.
