Gunmen kill policemen, injure three others
Unknown gunmen have killed two police officers and injured three others in an attack on a police checkpoint in Rivers State.
The incident occurred on Monday night at Mbodo Village in Aluu Community, Ikwerre Local Government Area, where the officers were conducting a routine stop-and-search operation.
According to sources, the assailants were travelling in a vehicle when they were flagged down by the police. Rather than comply with the officers’ instructions, the occupants reportedly opened fire on them.
Two officers were killed instantly, while three others sustained gunshot injuries. The injured officers were taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
Confirming the attack on Wednesday, the Rivers State Police Command Public Relations Officer, ASP Blessing Agabe, said the Commissioner of Police immediately visited the scene to assess the situation.
She added that the police chief also interviewed the surviving officer at the scene before proceeding to the hospital to visit the injured personnel receiving treatment.
Agabe said the Commissioner of Police had ordered a full-scale investigation into the attack and assured residents that efforts were underway to apprehend those responsible.
“Following the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Rivers State Command, promptly visited the crime scene to assess the situation firsthand.
“He also interviewed the officer who survived the attack and proceeded to the hospital, where he visited the injured officer currently receiving medical attention.
“The Commissioner has directed a comprehensive investigation into the incident and reaffirmed the Command’s unwavering commitment to ensuring that the perpetrators are identified, apprehended and brought to
justice,” she said.
